[Review] Taunting Tony by Marie James

38522172.jpg

Rules.

They’re a necessity. They make the world go ‘round and help idiots function in society.

Most don’t require much thought and are easy to follow—or so I thought…

I didn’t realize, however, that the new group of people I became friends with could have so many.

No sleeping with group member’s moms? Easy enough.

No shirts at the BBQ? I’m all over that. Do you know how hot it gets in Texas during summertime?

No sleeping with others in the group? Now this one… This one is killing me.

If you saw Joseph Snow, with those killer abs and cocky smirk, you’d be thinking the exact same thing… rules are meant to be broken.

Taunting Tony is an MM contemporary romance.

Review

Entertaining and captivating…..

This was a breath of fresh air to read…there was drama but nothing too untoward, and there was definitely humour and a general feel good factor…the group of friends, at its centre, are an entertaining lot; I loved their banter, and I found myself laughing out loud whilst reading some of their moments together….they are governed by a set of self-imposed rules that seem destined to be more of a hindrance than a help…

Tony and Joey have all the right chemistry but their relationship, which should have been relatively straightforward, has more than its fair share of obstacles…… these two guys are hot!!! And together they are incendiary….. this author always creates such interesting and authentic characters, and the cast in this book are no exception….but whether they are irritating, mean, kind or loving they are all worthy of their place in the proceedings..

This story of family, friendship and love was a thoroughly engaging and humorous read…

Echoes in the Storm by Max Henry

44e54a80-f647-4037-b711-5c0b1d237c68“Behind those eyes, a battle rages. One that’s not fought overseas with guns and tanks, but one that wreaks havoc in the homeland with harshly spoken words and misguided beliefs.”

One week is all we were supposed to share. One week as strangers. Yet you became so much more.

You were the echo in my storm.

All the little things you did differently irked me. I thought it meant we couldn’t get along, that there was no chance we’d work out. But when it came time for me to leave, you know what I figured out?

They were the faint call of home, lost on the wind and the roar of thunder. It was you calling me, hoping I’d hear you and find my way out of the dark that I had lost myself in when I shut off to survive.

You were my echo. My call back.

And fuck it all if I didn’t find home in the end.

Forget Me Not by Willow Winters

0c47361b-a105-4f9f-bc7b-4e8f91182cc7I fell in love with a boy a long time ago.

I was only a small girl.  Scared and frightened, I was taken from my home and held against my will.  His father hurt me, but he protected me and kept me safe as best he could.

Until I left him.

I ran the first chance I got and even though I knew he wasn’t behind me, I didn’t stop. The branches lashed out at me, punishing me for leaving him in the hands of a monster.

I’ve never felt such guilt in my life.

Although I survived, the boy was never found.  I prayed for him to be safe.  I dreamed he’d be alright and come back to me.  Even as a young girl I knew I loved him, but I betrayed him.

Twenty years later, all my wishes came true.

But the boy came back a man.  With a grip strong enough to keep me close and a look in his eyes that warned me to never dare leave him again.   I was his to keep after all.

Twenty years after leaving one hell, I entered another.  Our tale was only just getting started.

It’s dark and twisted.

But that doesn’t make it any less of what it is.

A love story.  Our love story.

I am an outlaw.

A proud member of the Unacceptables MC.

Our club is a family and we will do anything to protect it – and I mean anything.

The dust was finally settling from our last war. I was sober, the MC was healing from our loss, and life was getting back to normal. But regicide cannot go unpunished.

And when a newcomer arrives and threatens all that we hold dear…well, he better watch his back, because…

Macon by Marie James

df75c591-c337-445d-9e29-dd9a9f74609aTossing a middle finger to Macon, Georgia as I made my way to Nashville was always the dream. Sing country music, go on tour, top the charts—with my popularity growing every day, I was on my way.

But then a gust of wind blew up your skirt, and those white cotton panties had me hooked. I didn’t know your name, and you turned down every attempt I tried to throw your way. But I knew you were different, even though you told me I was the same.

“Friends” is what you offered, and I played by your rules, but, Adelaide Hatfield, you have to know, from that day, it was only you.

I just hope I can make you see how much you mean to me before we both drown in the sorrow of what heartbreak can truly be.

REVIEW: Macon by Marie James

Beautifully told original story..

A small town and two young people with big but very different dreams…the author pulled me into this bittersweet romance right from the start….this is a heartfelt story filled with wonderful and fascinating characters living in a vividly described imagined world…

The main protagonists Axton and Addie are two contrasting individuals …he is an aspiring musician focused on finding success and living the lifestyle and she is a preachers daughter focused on studying hard and escaping the expectations of her family…… their unlikely relationship is without question a rocky one and at times I felt so frustrated by the two of them as they constantly misinterpret and misunderstand each others perspectives and feelings…when they do put aside the drama they may have their differences but together their chemistry is a wondrous thing to behold….the author has created such relatable characters for example Addie and her two sisters are awesome together their interactions are so believable full of sisterly good humour, advice and love…

This is an beautifully told original story with a fascinating cast of characters and at the centre two people whose emotional intelligence grows exponentially as they experience life together and apart on their roads to finding happiness….I received a copy of this book from the author and reviewed on behalf of Summer’s Eve Reads….

REVIEW: Snatch by Marie James

Awesome 5 star read…..

Before I start this review I have two confessions firstly I am completely addicted to this series and the writings of this author and will therefore willingly read anything she writes which brings me to the second confession which is that I have never read a solely m/m book before; I have read combinations but a female has always featured in the relationship….

All I can say is….what have I been missing! this was such a wonderfully written thrilling and at times moving story… by the time I had finished the prologue I was an emotional wreck… in a world renowned for tough , rough womanising guys…..I loved the sexual awakening in the relationship between Snatch and his best friend Itch, the two main characters, which can only be described as HOT …..

One of the strengths of this series is that all the series main characters continue to feature in each new book and as the story progresses so their personalities have developed and my fondness for the bikers and the strong women of Cerebus MC world exponentially increases…yes they are a tight knit band of brothers and sisters and yes they will put their lives on the line but most compelling of all is the bond of love between them all and the complete acceptance of the diverse natures and needs of the family members in their entirety….

This had all the action packed, fast paced thrills and dirty talking that a reader would expect from the MC genre but in addition this was a captivating story of unrequited desires, courage, honesty and the discovery of a true and passionate love in the most unexpected of places..whilst each of these books, in theory, can be read as standalone I would highly recommend that they are read in the series order to better understand and appreciate the storyline this is particularly relevant for this book…….I am addicted to this 5 star series… I received a copy of this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review…

Series: standalone

Rock bottom.

They say the only way to go from there is up, but what is “up” when you’re born into someone else’s rock bottom?

At ten, football became my first love. It’s what got me out of the house away from my self-destructive family. My love for football landed me at Las Vegas University with a full ride scholarship, and the orange on my jersey was my favorite color…until my eyes landed on the red dress Fallyn wore the night we met.

At twenty-one, I jumped off the cliff into the unknown the second Fallyn McIntyre danced in my arms at a party. I had the greatest girl in the world and the opportunity to play college ball every Saturday. My rock bottom was looking up, thanks to my two first loves.

Parties, sex, and football—life was perfect. But one drink too many, and my world came crashing down. When I chose pills over my second love, my head told me it was the best decision I ever made. The pills keep me warm and protect me from the distance Fallyn created. Percs don’t judge me. They make me feel alive.

 Threes.

They say the best things come in threes, but one leads to a stable future, one is my salvation, and the other drags me to hell—a hell I’d willingly burn in for eternity…if it weren’t for my second love.

Sneak peek

Turning to face the guy who is either too stupid or too drunk to take a hint, my eyes land on the handsome face of a tall blond with the lightest blue eyes I’ve ever seen.

The smirk on his face clearly indicates he believes I should be impressed. And I am. There’s no doubt about it. I’m completely fascinated by the ego this douchebag emits with one simple look. Without a word, I let my eyes trail from the top of his purposely mussed hair that probably took longer to fix than mine to the orange chucks adorning his big feet.

He allows the perusal, awaiting my approval. Cocking an eyebrow at his blatant, pompous attitude, I push his hands off my hips.

“Not a chance, buddy,” I say before turning back toward the kitchen.

My legs tremble, wobbling on my already unsteady heels. I release a long, slow breath, hoping he disappeared into the crowd. The last thing I need is for him to notice the way my eyes lingered on his stubbled jaw and the muscles of his chest even his clothes can’t hide. I’m almost certain he could sense my quick, unmasked arousal. One look was all it took for this man to creep his way under my skin and throb in my core. He’s got self-entitled, bad boy, asshole written all over him—character traits I would have dropped anything for a few years ago. Not today, though. Those are flaws I left in Utah when I graduated high school.

The same firm grip reaches for me again, wrapping all the way around my body and pulling my back against an incredibly strong chest.

I close my eyes for a moment, allowing only a second of contact before turning around and readying my hand to slap him across the face for taking such liberties without my permission—just another alpha asshole attribute that used to make me swoon.

“You need to get your—”

His finger covers my lips, preventing me from getting my words out. My attempt at what I’m sure was going to be a very eloquent threat against his manhood falters as he pulls me closer to his body. His leg somehow finds its way between mine as he squats a couple inches to decrease the differences in our height.

The strong hand that has reached for me twice tonight is around my back, fingers splayed against the thin red fabric. The finger that halted my words trails down the column of my damp neck before gripping around at my nape. Gooseflesh follows the trail, racing over my fevered skin. He holds me against him, guiding me to the rhythm I hated until this very second. Like the traitorous slut she is, my body molds against him, every soft inch against his hardness.

“I don’t,” I begin again, only to have his hand leave my neck to push another finger against my parted lips.

I watch, enthralled and utterly stupid, as his bottom lip rolls between his teeth at the same time his thumb sweeps over mine.

I cave, wholeheartedly capitulating to the moment. Ignoring the warning bells going off in my head, screaming at me to bolt through the front door and not look back, I grip the silky athletic fabric of his jersey and pull him closer. A knowing grin lights his face and sparkles in the crystal blue of his eyes.

One song blends into another as our bodies close every millimeter of distance. No words are spoken as the countdown begins. No promises are made when the clock strikes midnight. No way I’ll survive this man when his breath becomes mine. No chance I’ll see him again when swaying all night turns into dancing tongues. No possibility of keeping my promise of no bad boys when one hand grips my nape and the other squeezes my ass.

Alcohol has never really been my thing. The memory of the first time I drank heavy liquor in high school is enough to make my stomach sour, but the bourbon on this guy’s lips is the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. It’s, hands down, the most satisfying thing I’ve tasted since the ice cream I had after getting my tonsils removed when I was seven. I savor every fraction of a second, every slow glide of his tongue against mine, each time his lips pull back a fraction and turn up to smile against mine.

Without so much as one spoken word, this man has managed to master my body, persuading it to beg for more, coaxing whimpers from my mouth when he pulls away, only to ensure it pants a seductive moan when those skilled lips find my neck.

A bittersweet and powerful love story….
I am not sure whether I love or hate the author of this captivating book…I mean who writes a sweet new adult sports romance and then allows it to spiral into a darker tale of impetuosity, addiction and lost opportunities…

What an emotional journey; I experienced despair, anger and laughter whilst reading this bittersweet story which reflects the complexities of the real world….this is a book about human fallibility where all the characters, whether friend or detractor, are totally believable….. I was fascinated by the relationship between the protagonists, loving, sexually charged, committed but also vulnerable to the actions and decisions of themselves and others from their past and present..

This is an intense story of self destruction and redemption but above all else it is a powerful love story…..Overall I can not say it was an enjoyable read but it was unequivocally an addictive five star one….

EXCERPT

I take in every inch of him, noticing first his muscular arms and wide shoulders. I see part of a tattoo peeking out from the arm of his t-shirt. The tiny hint makes me want to see it all. I’ve always been partial to inked bodies, loving how a story can be told in ink rather than words.
His dark, brown beard is ridiculously neat, trimmed to perfection. It surrounds pouty, kissable lips. I can’t help but wonder if he has chest hair. I’ve always been attracted to very masculine men. I realize how much of a freak I am, staring at this stranger, itching to see the rest of his tattoos and wondering what he’d look like naked, how my fingers would feel caressing his skin.
Soothing brown eyes look back at me, almost pleading with me to change my views of the world. His hair is longer on top than on the sides, tousled and messy as if he’s been running his hands through it for hours. Sexy, this man is incredibly sexy. He has an edge of danger to him, but at the same time, he seems completely approachable. He’s a wash of contradictions.
“I’m sorry about your fiancé,” he says reaching his hand out to take mine.
I pull away immediately, unable to hide the quiver in my lip at the mention of Alec.
“Don’t,” I say unsure of what the word is in reference to. Don’t touch me. Don’t mention the death of my best friend. Don’t walk out of here and leave me alone.
A few minutes of peace are all I’ve gotten since Alec’s death. A handful of times over the last couple of weeks my mind would shut down, and I forget, briefly, just how much I’ve lost. I got that reprieve looking at Kid until he ruined it by opening his mouth.
Why do people always feel the need to speak? Why verbalize the pain others are feeling? Sometimes just sitting, being available if needed is the best thing you can do.
“He’s my best friend,” I say on a choked sob. I have no idea why I’m telling him this. I don’t know why I feel the need to ease the hurt I saw in his eyes when I pulled my hand away from his touch. “Was. I lost my best friend.”
“Yeah,” he says, his voice full of sorrow. “I know what that feels like.”
I pull my eyes from looking at my own hands and look back at him. For the first time, I notice dog tags hanging around his neck. Small pieces of metal, unassuming for the most part, but I know they tell a story. Every soldier who wears them has one. It seems in a time of war, those stories get harder to tell.
Kid is young. I know he’s older than me. Even with an unmarred face and bright young eyes, he’s got an air about him that lets you know he’s seen more than most. He’s suffered more than most.
I immediately feel some sort of kindred-ship with him. I begin to shut the little part of myself down that he somehow forced me to open. He’s so young; there’s a good chance he’s still a soldier, and there’s no guarantee that any of them are safe. It’s best to just keep every one of them at a distance.
“You’re in the Army?” I finally manage to ask, angling my head at the tags around his neck.
I watch as he reaches his hand up and touches them as if he’s worn them so long he’s forgotten that they’re even there.
“I was in the Marines,” he answers quickly. “I’ve been out for a couple years now.”
“How old are you?” Was a soldier? No longer in the service? He doesn’t look old enough.
“Twenty-four.”
Six years older than me. I shake my head, knowing he sees nothing but a child sitting here in this bed. Not that I expect anything different, but I’m tired of being viewed as a child.
