REVIEW: Sin and Discipline by Lily White

Lennon Carter first saw my face with his hand around my throat.

Shock widened his eyes, starbursts of anger for what I’d done.
That moment should have been the last of us; our beginning and end.
Fate, it seems, had other plans.

A dedicated musician, Lennon would become my mentor, my shadow, my protector and nightmare.
We were two discordant notes that somehow blended with perfect harmony.
Challenged to become a pianist as talented as him, I became Lennon’s SIN, while he became my DISCIPLINE.

This is Lily White back to her erotic, emotional best. Although this isn’t as overtly dark as many of White’s prior releases, there are dark undertones for sure and it packs a truly emotional punch. These two protagonists have a substantial amount of grit and pain to deal with, and it’s in the solace and discipline of each other that they can come to terms with it.

I was enthralled from the first page.

Technically, there are taboo undertones here with the forbidden romance trope, but before you put this book down, it’s really quite firmly an undertone rather than a main part of the plot, and it’s dealt with maturely and rather beautifully. This truly is driven by the character development rather than the forbidden, and there’s a smattering of erotic and kinky scenes to go with…actual eroticism that has you…err…you know.

Overall, a wonderful balance of everything I love in a good book. Well done Lily White.

“Who are you, Amelia Dillon?”
Confusion flooded me. “What?”
It bothered me how my question came out more as a startled squeak than a word.
He grinned, just the corner of his lips curling with lazy satisfaction. Reaching out with his free hand, he trapped my chin between his fingers, holding my gaze to his without concern that I hadn’t invited the touch. Electricity sparked where his skin met mine, my head dizzy, my breath as uneven as my heartbeat.
“Who are you?”
My heart was in my throat, beating staccato so hard that I swore I was a few seconds from passing out. “I don’t-“
The gentle tone of his voice was at odds with his question. “Are you the shitty little thief hiding in a hoodie and baggy jeans? Or are you a musician who demands respect based on her talent and discipline?”
He was enjoying this moment far too much, the truth of his amusement written in the line of his lips, the sleepy look in his blue eyes. It only frightened me more.
“I’m a musician,” I whispered.
Mr. Carter leaned forward and I panicked, my eyes locked to his lips. He shouldn’t have been this close to me. There had to be rules against this. He didn’t seem to care.
I wasn’t a girl to be pushed around or controlled. Yet, in his presence, I stilled in place, unable to find the willpower to fight or move away.
Breath hot against my cheek, he whispered, “I don’t think you are. I think a musician would know better than to risk her hands acting like a stupid hoodrat that robs people. I think a musician knows better than to question the man who will be judging her performance. I think-“
My lips parted on a tremulous breath.
“-you didn’t believe me when I warned you I would spank your ass red if I ever caught you doing something so stupid again.”
There was no question about it; I was three seconds away from passing out.
He knew it and I knew it, his blue eyes locked to mine when he warned, “You should know that threat extends to you questioning me in class as well.”

Review

Background
Lily White has fast become one of my must-click authors, and having very much enjoyed reading the first in this duet, I was awaiting the second with much anticipation.

Cover
Much better than the first, this cover is dark and really grabs the attention whilst providing a small hint about what’s to come.

Writing
White is, for the most part, a fantastic writer: thoughtful, concise, poetic. However, I found I struggled a little throughout this second part of the novel. Perhaps it was the writing style or perhaps it was just that I couldn’t stand Elijah’s POV (of which there was considerably more here).

Either way, everything just felt incredibly drawn out and repetitive, enough to provide me with the impression of someone enjoying exhibiting how clever and how much thought had gone into the characters and their deceit. This is the main reason this book was only rated three stars. It became a struggle and I really found myself wanting to finish it just so I could remove it from my ‘Currently Reading’ shelf.

Characters
Whilst Elijah and Jacob were developed nicely here (perhaps, in some respects, developed a little too well!), Eve just felt more like a doll, a prop along for the ride, despite her major role in the first novel. I understand the themes moving to the brothers and familial love, and uncovering the darkness of the past, but I prefer my characters to be more than just love interests, and be more interesting than that (and, indeed, stronger).

Conclusion
Although maintaining its intrigue, the slower pace of Fear the Wicked lets this second instalment down, making it drag and lost its power. This, and an ending that hints at a slight cop-out, leave this read as three-stars for me — Lily White, however, remains on my one-click list.

Rules of Engagement by Lily White

Rules of Engagement Final Cover social media size.jpg

Synopsis

Rule No. 1:  Do not enter the game unless you intend to finish. Once accepted, there is no escape.

This is a love story, one that comes with rules, expectations, and dark shadows. One where the man who challenges me the most is cloaked in deception. I had no choice but to accept the terms, nowhere to run once the clock started ticking.

Donovan Stone was a man few people dared to cross.

He was dark.

He was dominating.

He was so silent that you had to watch him closely to begin to know what he was thinking.

He was my boss, and the man I should have run from the minute I walked into his corporate office.

Like any bad decision, it took time for me to see the truth about the game I’d entered, for me to understand that it wasn’t the stalker in the shadows I should fear, but the man who pulled the strings.

I had no choice.

At least, that’s the lie I told myself to forgive my foolish actions.

And while running as fast as I could through twisted mazes and deceitful games, I understood that the Rules of Engagement were now my life.

In Too Deep by Jordan Marie

In Too DeepI did a bad thing.

I did a really bad thing.

I’m not a bad person, I swear. I just made a few mistakes.

Mistake number one was agreeing to rent my hotel out to an insufferable a**hole, named Aden Smith.

Mistake number two was ignoring his threats to sue me when he handed over a list of items he deemed “unacceptable”.

Mistake number three was diving into the pool to save his life when he fell. It would have been less complicated to hide his body.

When the hospital refuses to let me know how he is, I panic.

Claiming to be his wife might be my biggest mistake yet—especially when he believes me!

He might have been the one drowning, but I’m sinking in a bed of lies, going down fast—and there’s not a rescue in sight.

He’s the powerful attorney, now world-renowned after coming off the trial of a century which was publicized across the country. And I’m one of the reporters that sat in his courtroom.

I know his type. I’ve dated his type. Which is why when I happen to come face to face with him, when sparks fly and heat simmers between us, I know what happens if I say “yes” to Reese Summer.

I know he’ll taste like sin and sex, even before he kisses me.

I know he’ll feel like pleasure and passion, even before he touches me.

I know he’ll demand more than I wants to give, and yet, because I dare to give myself to him, the result will be deliciously hot.

I know that I will not leave his bed without being utterly, completely sated.

And I know that I will leave the next morning anyway.

And so, I do.

And so, he follows.

REVIEW: Illusions of Evil by Lily White

I haven’t been particularly overwhelmed by the last couple of Lily White releases, but this is completely back to form. Although a slow start, which I have to admit I struggled with, it really picked up, especially towards the end, to become a scene of sweet chaos, including the darkness and evil White is so well-known for. A ‘snowball effect’ climax, this was one dark and strong ending which has really fed my desire to read the next to find out what happens.

I loved how there wasn’t really any romance as such in this. It was about pleasures of the flesh, about temptation and about power and corruption, sometimes shocking, other times erotic. One particular scene which stood out to me—when I felt myself sit up and think, hey, I’m into this now, what’s gonna happen?—was that of Jacob giving his homily. Then, things got really dark.

So dark, in fact, I’m not sure I can see the light—but I plan on stumbling through to reach the end of the tunnel regardless.

Long for Me by Stacey Lynn

0917_9781488028267_Long_For_Me_WebMy boss already controls my days; do I want to give him my nights, as well?

Rebecca

I’ve seen what happens when you give everything to a man. That’s not what I want. I won’t have my heart crushed in anyone’s fist.

Then he changed everything.

Him. Bennett Ashby. My boss.

Seeing him at Luminous, dressed in leather pants and wielding a whip…

Do I crave this?

My mind says no, but my body is starting to have very different ideas.

Bennett

I knew Rebecca Morales would be the perfect assistant. That’s why I hired her.

I didn’t know that working with her every day would lead to temptation—to own her, to possess her.

When she walked into Luminous, I knew I was screwed. Dipping your pen in the company ink is never smart, but we both agreed what happens at the club stays there.

One night and then it’s back to business tomorrow.

Except I don’t want just one night with Rebecca. I want them all.

Her Master’s Redemption by Lily White

Her Master's Redemption cover social media sizeI was a Master.
To understand me, you must understand my past.
My father was a Master. My mother his Courtesan.
I was raised in a business that trained women to become whores for the men that owned them. I was taught to train with a strict hand…but to seduce with a kind heart.
Although my mother was one of those golden whores, the women broken and rebuilt to become everything their owner could desire, my mother – in her wisdom and beauty – trapped the heart of her Master.
Through her perseverance, she never let the man go.
Naturally, I followed in his footsteps, not once finding love, but almost gaining a son.
My heart was destroyed on a clear summer day when my child was stripped from my hands. Redemption for my crimes was lost, and loneliness like a man should never know was gained.
Until I found Seraphina…
She thought she could deny me. She thought she could choose her fate or determine the course her life would run. She thought she would never love another because she couldn’t love herself.
With a shattered heart and rebellious mind, she believed her life was broken. She chose death as an avenue to escape the life she was given, and she believed there was nobody who could stand in her way.
As her Master, it was my duty to show her…
…that all her beliefs were wrong.
