REVIEW: Road to Ruin by Callie Hart & Jonny James

A massively promising start to a new joint venture between one of my top favourite authors, Callie Hart, and the debut from model Jonny James, this first instalment injects the typical grit of a Callie Hart novel into a new setting: New Orleans.

Although the promise was that this would be dark to a new extreme, I’ve either read too much from that genre recently and have thus become desensitised, or this fell a little flat of that. Either way, it didn’t stop me grimacing at some of the gore and brutality – though nothing I wouldn’t already expect from something written by Hart.

One of the strongest aspects of this novel was the character development. Tommy and Nikita are both incredibly strong, independent characters; deadly, dangerous, and able to hold their own. And when they come together (which, by the way, was done in a way that felt massively refreshing in comparison to many of the other novels I’ve read recently – I love a no-excuses-necessary woman who knows exactly what she wants), they really do make something fierce. Even the supporting cast was perfectly formed: brutal, but three-dimensional. There are no caricatures here.

This is a relationship to get behind, characters to follow and grow attached to, and a plot full to the brim of intrigue.

The first I’ve read in a while which has made me disappointed when I’ve reached the final page. I want more, and boy, am I excited to see what this duo will bring us in part two.

Heat: ★★★
Rating: ★★★★

This is a standalone spin-off of the Dead Man’s Ink series, which I would highly recommend you read before this (it’s well worth it).

She isn’t “morning-sunrise” kind of beautiful. She’s “out-of-control-burn-your-fucking-house-down-forest-fire” kind of beautiful.

As ever, Hart delivers a dark, gritty read with just enough sex to complement the darkness and characters. This was probably one of her most original storylines, with enough depth and strings to the rest of the world to feel fully-fledged (and, frankly, fucking dangerous and bat-shit crazy). These stories, and this world, keep me entertained and occupied for hours at a time, and it remains a top favourite.

“It’s gonna be intense, and it might make you nervous, but it’ll never be more than I think you can handle. And I will never hurt you. Do you trust me enough to hand yourself over to me?”

Where I felt this book was a little disappointing was actually due to Cade feeling like more of a generic character this time. Zeth and Rebel are both gorgeously characterised, easily recognisable, but Cade faded a little into the background for me – apart from during the super hot sex scenes, which were right up my street, even if not so prominent as in Hart’s other releases.

Regardless, it was still super-fun, a bit grittier than Hart’s other work (and that’s saying something!) and wonderful to finally be able to explore Cade’s character and get to the bottom of this plotline.

Ophelia Lang needs money, and she needs it bad. Her parent’s restaurant is going under, and ever since she lost her job teaching third grade elementary, scraping enough cash together to pay the bills has proven almost impossible. Her parents are on the brink of losing their home. The vultures are circling overhead. So when Ophelia is offered an interview for a well-paid private tutoring gig in New York, how can she possibly say no?

Ronan Fletcher is far from the overweight, balding businessman Ophelia expected him to be. He’s young, handsome, and wealthy beyond all reason. He’s also perhaps the coldest, rudest person she’s ever met, and has a mean streak in him a mile and a half wide. A hundred grand is a lot of money, however, and if tolerating his frosty temperament, his erratic mood swings and whatever else he throws at her means she’ll get paid, then that is what Ophelia will do.

Her new boss is keeping secrets, though. Awful, terrible secrets.

The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.

Review

Heat: ★★★
Rating: ★★★★

He was fearless. He was confident. He was strong, and he was honest. He was also a little broken – a truth that he didn’t mind owning.

This is another of many books I’ve read recently that I’m struggling to review, simply because I do not want to give away any of the storyline, whilst somehow encouraging you to one-click the damn book right now. So if you could trust me, that’d make my life a lot easier right now…

“God, loving you is the cruelest, most unkind thing I can do to you, and yet I’m going to do it anyway.”

There are so many plot twists, the first of which left me utterly gobsmacked, made me sit up and drop my Kindle, and made me want to continue reading all through the night. Hart has done a fabulous job here of hinting in the synopsis at what is to happen, yet making it a story completely different to the one I was expecting.

He was a man possessed. I was a woman lost. Together, we were two halves of something fragile and delicate, beautiful in its complexity.

This was crushing, heartwarming and wonderfully romantic(and even occasionally pretty funny, too). A welcome diversion of Hart’s typical grittier reads, this still packs an emotional punch whilst delivering a story about personal growth, with none of the forced angst so typical in romance books these days. This is a couple to really rally behind.

Coralie

Twelve years ago, I ran to stay alive.

Port Royal, South Carolina, was my home. I was born there. I fell in love there. And I nearly died there. I never thought I’d go back. Now, after so many years, I have to return to bury the man who made my life a living hell. Some nights, I used to cry myself to sleep, praying my father would die. Other nights were different. Other nights, there was him.

Callan Cross.

My first confidante. My first kiss. My first love. My first everything: Callan was the glue that held me together when everything else was falling apart. He was my savior. He was there for me whenever I needed him…

Until he wasn’t.

Every night, I’ve seen the love of my life in my sleep.
I just never thought I’d have to face him again.

Callan

Twelve years ago, I f*#@ed up big time.

Living life through a camera lens is sometimes easier than dealing with it head on. Scratch that. It’s always easier. For over a decade, I’ve been a master of my art, taking photographs all over the world. Yet despite all of the countries I’ve visited, the amazing things I’ve seen, the beautiful women I’ve screwed, my heart has remained in pieces.

Coralie’s the only woman I’ve ever loved, will ever love. And I’m determined to show her that we’re meant to be together. Even if it means unearthing the bones of the past in the process.

A lifetime and a thousand miles have stood between us.
Now, there’s no length of time I won’t wait, no distance I won’t travel, in order to make her mine.

★★★★★

I don’t give out five star reviews lightly. Never before have I felt a book affect me in such a way. Callie Hart has a knack for creating characters with the realistic rawness and darkness that many others lack. This was a struggle to read at points, conveying the all-consuming need to feel alive again, and the utter emptiness of the two lead characters unbelievably well.

I have never felt so strongly towards book characters before, and it is a testament to Callie’s writing that she managed to create such a complex but perfect relationship. I have to say that Callan Cross is my new book boyfriend (though perhaps I should amend it to my ‘story soul mate’, as ‘book boyfriend’ sounds too casual for my feelings towards him!).

I cried, I laughed, and my heart hurt whilst reading this. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Review

Title: Savage Things
Author: Callie Hart
Series: Chaos & Ruin #2
Genre: MC, erotic romance, thriller
Heat: 4/5
Plot: 4/5
Rating: 4/5

NB: This is the second instalment in Callie Hart’s Chaos & Ruin series, the sequel to the Blood & Roses series. For full enjoyment and immersion, it is best to delve into this universe from the beginning.

Once again, Callie Hart takes us on a suspenseful, romantic, sexy and emotional journey in her latest novel. I really cannot get enough of Zeth and Sloane’s relationship and adventures, and with a highly strong, complex supporting cast (both the good guys and the bad guys), populating one of the most tightly planned and well-executed universes out there. Every time I read one of these books I feel overwhelmed at how brilliant it is.

This particular instalment is perhaps one of the least suspenseful, but turns back into a much more emotional read, allowing us to see the more vulnerable sides of Zeth and Sloane, along with the secondary characters Michael and Mason. Hart once again pulls no punches, with the brutality she writes so well.

It’s an intriguing direction this series is being taken in, and has opened up a number of further questions to be answered in the coming instalments (and, of course, potential for further series set in this addictive universe). I’m very appreciative of Zeth’s actions in the ending, which for me was surprising in the best possible way, and is testament to how Hart does not conform to romance tropes whilst still managing to involve real romance and progression in these characters’ lives and relationships.

REVIEW: Ransom – Callie Hart

25234883Title: Ransom
Author: Callie Hart
Series: Dead Man’s Ink #3
Genre: biker/crime romance
Rating: ****

The best aspect of this trilogy is seeing Sophia’s character development, growing from a sheltered girl into a strong woman, getting in on all the action and refusing to be left behind. One of Hart’s strengths is in writing interesting female characters who can hold their own in a highly anti-female world, partly through their relationships but also by their own right, too. That being said, I don’t feel that anything could possibly top the climax of Rogue, although this did come close.

This world is beautifully constructed, with so many characters and interlinking plots, containing all the intricate, delicious and dangerous details. The plot of Ransom did not disappoint, based around an important character being abducted by the infamous Hector Ramirez. With some steamy moments, some heart-racing moments and some absolutely grim violent detail, Hart never holds back and this just adds to the realism of the series.

I’m sad to see the end of the Dead Man’s Ink series, not least because Rebel is one of my all-time favourite book boyfriends, but I can’t wait to delve back into this world, the detail of which is its greatest strength and keeps readers coming back for more. Someone really needs to give this universe a Wikia site.
