Hard Trigger by S.L. Hannah

Plenty of action…..not enough depth….

Wow this is topsy turvy short story with a fascinating premise but, unfortunately, one that I did not enjoy quite as much as I thought I would…. talk about role reversal…. Victoria is the bad*** antiheroine who is holding all the cards and Diego is her childhood ‘sweetheart’, equally ruthless because it comes with the territory, but willing to sacrifice so much for her..

The story is told from Victoria’s perspective, which should have given me a ring-side view of her innermost thoughts and feelings, but that was not the case…. in fact there is very little insight into the emotions of Victoria or Diego .. Considering this was a short story I learned a lot about gaming machines and other inconsequential details, but Victoria and Diego’s emotional intelligence remained a mystery.. particularly because in their intimate moments it was all action and little dialogue, and anything worth saying was in Spanish, leaving me none the wiser…. as a result of all of this I never really liked Victoria and felt Diego could have found someone better and therefore was not invested in the outcome of their volatile relationship…

This storyline had so much potential and the writing itself is good…but for me there was too much emphasis on the action, and too much explanation of the minutiae, and not enough time spent on developing the characters who lacked depth and empathy….

The Golden Line by Addison Cain

The Golden Line by Addison Cain

It’s no secret that Addison Cain is one of my favourite authors of all time. Whenever I’m in a book funk, I pick up anything of hers and shove my nose deep into my Kindle. It’s the perfect cure, and I can honestly say I could read any of her work over and over again. It’s original and exquisite, and the former is something difficult to find in today’s saturated indie book market.

The Golden Line is probably the first book in the last few months that has actually made me stop and savour it. I consumed it in one day, but I rolled the delicious words around in my mouth in felt the dark eroticism to my very core.

This is a story to really get into, characters to actually quite literally care about, and a world to revisit over and over again. Morgaine was fabulous, and Simin her dark hero — and yes, ‘hero’ is the correct word for him in this one — and the plot was not at all what I was expecting, taking a fork about halfway through to truly make this a different work from Born to be Bound and the Alpha’s Claim trilogy.

Fantastic and worthy in its own right, The Golden Line is one of my top releases of 2018.

NB: The Golden Line was originally a short story, Consumed, published in the Royally Mine anthology. It has been extensively extended and is well worth picking up even if you’ve read the original.

Something more….

So the third of the three Graces has their moment in the spotlight.. this story is very much in a similar vein to the previous instalments with the focus being on the relationship between the three main protagonists..and with very little interaction between the three women that the series is based upon, which I think is a shame…

Rachel, an independent single mother, has a history with the Colson brothers, who unexpectedly come back into her life… the backstory indicated some potential suspense but unfortunately there is no intrigue ; and in fact there are several potential storylines which are never developed and instead secrets and concerns are resolved swiftly without any conflict… this is purely a romantic novella about three people re-igniting an old flame despite devastating events in the intervening years… Hannah, the autistic daughter of Rachel adds a fascinating thread to the plot and provides another layer to the story, and I enjoyed reading the scenes in which the Colson brothers, Rachel and Hanna are together..

As a short erotic story this is lightweight and drama free; the focus is, by and large, based solely on the past and present sexual antics of the three protagonists and whilst it was easy reading, I was left wanting something more from not only this book but from the complete series as a whole…

[Review] Walk the Line by J. Kenner

Elena is too young for me, not to mention she’s my boss’s daughter and my babysitter.

That’s beyond complicated. And I’m not even looking for a relationship — but I can’t deny the attraction that sizzles between us.

I need to ignore it. A single dad, all I want is to take care of my little girl, do my job, and enjoy my friends. Anything more is asking for complications I can’t afford. Asking to be hurt again.

Trouble is, I want her, too. And when out flirty sparks turn to flames, I give in to temptation. Our secret fling is scorching hot, better than I’d ever imagined.

But secrets get out, and I could lose my job and my reputation.

And I am starting to realize she’s the one thing I’m not willing to lose.

I’m so sad this series is over! I loved coming to The Fix every month and seeing all these couples fall in love. Brent and Elena are no different.

Single dad to the little munchkin Faith we have seen a few times, and daughter to Boss-man Tyree make for the cutest couple. Yes, he’s older. Yes, he’s a single dad. None of that matters to Elena though. She has had her eye on her Brent from the beginning and finally, he is beginning to see her.

Little does she know that he has had his eye on her the whole time too. His age and status in the bar has kept him at bay, but when she’s babysitting Faith one night for him, all walls are down and they finally decide to take a chance on each other. It may be the best thing either of them has ever done.

Super-love to this couple. I’ve been waiting for Brent’s story since book one when we first met him and I wanted more. Kenner delivered on this whole series and they will be on the reread list for years to come.

Singer/songwriter Anna James is getting desperate. Even with a day job, money’s tight, and she’s wound tighter yet, having sworn off sex to reconcile with her mother who’s in chemo and her father who disowned her for her wild, wicked ways. No sooner than her psychic best friend predicts an end to Anna’s self-imposed drought, rock stars Jackson and Jacob Thomason come to town, with the dream of an indie album co-written with local American Indian flutist Nico White and his songwriting partner AJ McPherson.

The triple-platinum artists are attracted to Anna, who gives as good as she gets. Learning that Anna’s alter ego AJ puts the “twist” in Nico’s “tribal” music only makes them want her more. The part-Comanche Thomason twins need an album’s worth of songs. That means spending night after night, working closely, getting to know each other, learning how to co-create.

Anna’s never written music with anyone but Nico. Their collaborations are so natural, so organic. They’re comfortable with each other. The Thomason twins, who perform as No Mercy, make her anything but. What’s a fangirl to do, when submitting to her rock star idols means exploring the darker side of passion?

A BDSM MFM ménage erotic rock star romance, written for Ages 18+.

Musical menage…

The second of the three Graces…. and in many ways this was a much more enjoyable read for me than the first in the series…first and foremost this instalment met my expectation regarding interactions between the three Graces , well at least two of them, as Grace and Anna kick off the story ….Next the story is better developed I loved that she was an unknown, talented musician and that her problems are answered by a double act who have everything she needs and so much more..

This is a short novella and naturally there is an instalust vibe… but this book also delves into the world of eroticism and bdsm …. the guys like to play and nothing seems to be off their table as they embark on a journey of exploration with Anna, which at times strays away from safe … the writing is clear and the voice of Anna provides a useful perspective as the story progresses… I know nothing about the world of music making, but it would appear that the author has done her research in relation to the industry, however, at times the story was heavy on detail and there was a tendency toward information overload.

Although there were elements that detracted from the storytelling, overall I enjoyed this book and whilst I still feel there could be more development in regards to the characters and the friendship between the three ‘Graces’, I found myself caught up in the evolving relationship between Anna and the twins both romantically and professionally, and I am still eager to read the third Grace’s story…

Darkly beautiful and compelling….

Layer upon layer of suspense and intrigue… who would have thought the tortuous journey though Twist Me would lead to this point…and beyond

The world building is extensive and all encompassing and Peter and Sara are the main focus of the continuing plot…. He has no doubts about what and who he wants and no illusions as to the risks that have to be faced and annihilated, if needs be, to achieve his aims..the coming together of these two has been less than orthodox as he continues with his obsessive need to control and to own .. she has been very much the victim in this story but by no means weak or passive…she is strong and in many ways powerful…

This is a thrilling instalment and the evolving relationship between these two is elemental and darkly beautiful and compelling..it is wrong on so many levels and yet it is perfectly right … I was totally absorbed by this compelling story ….and the cliffhanger ending promises dark days ahead……

Something else…

This is a short paranormal erotic story; really well written with magical characters, and at its heart an unusual love story which spans a multitude of lifetimes…

Grace is a quirky and gifted seer who has been reincarnated many times… I loved the premise .. with the three main protagonists having lived different lives, with different outcomes, in different bodies before this current lifetime… but whilst there were a lot of positives there were aspects of this book that I found disappointing…

Firstly the blurb indicated that the book was to focus on three women and I had anticipated reading a story that incorporated interactions between them..but in fact the other two were only mentioned in passing and had no relevance to the storyline… I was so looking forward to the interactions between them and that did not happen..

Secondly there are times when the narrative dwells on the mystical and reads a bit like an encyclopaedia of astrological and mythological terms; whilst this provided a window into Grace’s world it seemed very detailed for a novella… which brings me on to the final concern I had which is that this was potentially such a great plot and could easily have taken a full length novel to explore the characters and their imagined world..but instead the focus was very much on the steamy and erotic and not enough on development of story or the individual players…

So here is my dilemma..this was an original and fascinating plot which drew me in..but ultimately left me knowing very little about the characters and feeling that they were all just a little bit too amicable and accepting of their situation… The other ‘Graces’ are yet to have their moment in the spotlight and I shall continue to read with interest, and in the hope of something else, or a little bit more…
