Themes: BDSM, forbidden love
Heat: 5/5

Rating: 4/5

Once again, Nikki Sloane has written a scorchingly sexy read for her Blindfold Club – a series I am huge fan of. I cannot believe it’s taken me this long to get round to reading them.

I’d never made a good girl beg and couldn’t imagine anything sweeter.

So, I feel it’s important to mention that this particular release contains, in some respects, some sexual acts that are probably a little more controversial than her previous releases – so if choking, public sex, group sex, voyeurism, exhibitionism and minor elements of humiliation turn you off, you may not want to pick this one up. If, however, you’re a dirty fuck like me, this will be right up your street.

I didn’t ask for permission, I took. I possessed. She fucking submitted.

It was nice to see a little (a lot?) more of Dominic and Payton in this release (they are, so far, my favourite couple from the series), and there was a wonderful emotional undertone to Joseph and Noemi’s relationship, which had to deal with the events of Joseph’s past, an age difference and an element of forbidden love. As ever, they are characters fully formed, characters to fall in love with and situations to make this a hot and heavy one-handed read.

If I had to pick a flaw, I’d say that I felt the later half of the book moved a little too quickly for me. The plot was fantastic, but could really have been drawn out just a little longer to make my heart ache – as it was, everything sort of wrapped up a little too nicely, too quickly.

“Having everything taken away from you teaches you who you really are.” The thought stormed into my mind. “You want that from me? To take away your control so you can find yourself?”

Another fabulously sexy read from Nikki Sloane, combining edgy, graphic sex with characters that pack a proper emotional punch. Sloane is, firmly, a one-click author for me. She can do no wrong.

if-i-were-youOur romance pick: If I Were You by Lisa Renee Jones

How it all started…

One day I was a high school teacher on summer break, leading a relatively uneventful but happy life. Or so I told myself. Later, I’d question that, as I would question pretty much everything I knew about me, my relationships, and my desires. It all began when my neighbor thrust a key to a storage unit at me. She’d bought it to make extra money after watching some storage auction show. Now she was on her way to the airport to elope with a man she barely knew, and she needed me to clear out the unit before the lease expired.

Soon, I was standing inside a small room that held the intimate details of another woman’s life, feeling uncomfortable, as if I was invading her privacy. Why had she let these items so neatly packed, possessions that she clearly cared about deeply, be lost at an auction? Driven to find out by some unnamed force, I began to dig, to discover this woman’s life, and yes, read her journals—-dark, erotic journals that I had no business reading. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I read on obsessively, living out fantasies through her words that I’d never dare experience on my own, compelled by the three men in her life, none of whom had names. I read onward until the last terrifying dark entry left me certain that something had happened to this woman. I had to find her and be sure she was okay.

Before long, I was taking her job for the summer at the art gallery, living her life, and she was nowhere to be found. I was becoming someone I didn’t know. I was becoming her.

The dark, passion it becomes…

Now, I am working at a prestigious gallery, where I have always dreamed of being, and I’ve been delivered to the doorstep of several men, allof which I envision as one I’ve read about in the journal. But there is one man that will call to me, that will awaken me in ways I never believed possible. That man is the ruggedly sexy artist, Chris Merit, who wants to paint me. He is rich and famous, and dark in ways I shouldn’t find intriguing, but I do. I so do. I don’t understand why his dark side appeals to me, but the attraction between us is rich with velvety promises of satisfaction. Chris is dark, and so are his desires, but I cannot turn away. He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.

All I know for certain is that he knows me like I don’t even know me, and he says I know him. Still, I keep asking myself — do I know him? Did he know her, the journal writer, and where is she? And why doesn’t it seem to matter anymore? There is just him and me, and the burn for more.

Heat: ★★★★

How can he be so damn hot and so damn despicable at the same time?

I skimmed through a few of the other reviews before putting my own into words, mainly because I enjoyed this so much that I was curious as to why there were so many mixed reviews. The main theme that kept coming up was that some of Mac’s actions were considered a little “rapey”, leading to a few DNFs and poor reviews. I understand this, I do – but this wasn’t an issue for me. Maybe my mind has just been warped from all the dark erotic I’ve been reading. Yes, there were some coercion scenes here, dub-con at a push, but I felt Huss’ narrative made it absolutely clear that Ellie didwant what was happening. Yes, there was kink and filth, but from where I was reading, it was all consensual, justpushing the boundaries of erotic fantasy a little. So don’t let that stop you if you’re concerned about this read.

“Talk to me like a dirty slut, Ellie, and I’ll make you come so hard, your legs will spasm and your body will collapse.”

Moving on – this was a fucking hot read. Who doesn’t enjoy delving into the office romance fantasies with an outrageously alpha boss, especially when they involve a wonderfully dominant character, right from the start? And especially when they involve one of those rare, proper face-fucking scenes. And it was outrageous. There was a fair bit of melodrama and overreaction, with both characters. Yet, I just couldn’t tear myself away from this romance. Not only was it hideously heartwarming, but it was also incredibly funny. I read the first 25% whilst my brother was watching Stranger Things, and he kicked me out because I was laughing so hard. Huss just kept making these awfully cringeworthy moments even worse, and I fucking loved it.

I like his power. I like the way he talks to me. The way he assumes I will just obey his commands.

This was by no means perfect – it was a pretty predictable, typical romance plot, complete with big romantic gestures, but where it felt better was both with the sex and chemistry between the two leads, and Ellie’s character. She was adorable, delusional and clutzy. And kinky. I very much enjoyed seeing her character progression throughout these pages, one of the stronger aspects of this read. Would I read the sequel? Absolutely. Bring it on.

“Go and put up your walls, Payton. They don’t stop me.”

As ever, Nikki Sloane delivers a scorchingly sexy erotica novel with just the right amount of romance and drama to keep it interesting. The main thing that stood out for me in this book, besides the acute chemistry between the two leads, was the characterisation of Dom. He was unbelievably awesome. It’s so refreshing to have the hero of a romance not be totally dominant and alpha, but instead be sensitive, embarrassed and a little unsure of himself (with the capability to go uber-dom at the perfect moment, despite his inexperience). Similarly, I found Payton a strong supporting character in the previous novel, and it was wonderful to be able to explore her strong, independent character further.

The romance aspect was surprisingly heartwarming, and managed to fulfil the disgustingly girly romantic part of me without being too stupid and unrealistic. I think that’s what makes this series so good – there’s incredibly hot sex, but underneath that there’s a sweet love story, with characters that are actually developed enough to root for and care about. Even during the group sex scenes, Sloane manages to maintain their connection, similarly to the previous instalment, resulting in a panty-melting scene but without ruining the romance and relationship that has been built up between the two.

“I can’t make you say you love me.” He blinked and the aqua in his eyes darkened. They filled with determination. “But I can make you feel it.”

Sloane is also a master at sex scenes. Everything I’ve read so far has had a five-star heat rating, and I’m not ashamed to say that yes, these scenes make me wet. Always. I think it’s to do with the creativity of them, but also the fact that I fully believe the romance between the characters too, which just leads to me being more emotionally involved, even when they’re doing all manner of things to one another.

Overall, a sickeningly romantic, scorchingly hot read that’ll leave you panting for more. If you like BDSM without the dark (or, like me, love BDSM and the dark), this is the series for you. Now, onto the next one.
