Distorted Love by T.L. Smith

I loved him from the age of sixteen.
Hated him from the age of eighteen.
He disappeared at the age of nineteen.
We started off as enemies, then fast became lovers.
But our story isn’t a happily ever after.
It was a story of a king and a peasant. Can you guess which I was?
I knew we weren’t meant to be.
You see, he fell in love with her first. He loved me last.
I’m not someone’s second choice.
Not even for the boy who stole my heart.
I’m someone’s first.
Now, I just have to remember that.

Breaking all my rules….

Well this book had me so conflicted;….I love the writing of this author; she creates complex and believable characters who invariably live in dark and foreboding worlds…and this young adult addition to her collection has all that and more..But, no matter how twisted a story gets I have my own set of rules for the books that I read, and the primary one is that I must feel confident that the two main characters only have true feelings for each other, and that, at some indeterminate point in the future they will find their own brand of happy ever after together, no matter the journey they take to arrive there…sadly the love quadrangle within this story and the ambiguous feelings of those involved does not give me any great confidence that the conclusion will match my exacting expectations…

But here is the thing; all that being said, I truly loved this book…. I was pulled into this story right from the start, and I found myself swept up in the drama and the unravelling of the worlds in which these characters exist…..This is a brutal and emotional read that broke my heart, with revelations and sacrifices being made by all…Intriguingly the narrative is interspersed with an anonymous character making spurious visits to a confessional; I do love a mystery….

I simply could not put this book down……for now I shall be satisfied with the fact I have read a compelling and addictive story that left me desperate to know more, no matter the final destinies of those involved… I remain hopeful, nevertheless, that the two irrevocably damaged individuals, at the heart of this gritty tale, can find a way to be together when the final page of this series is turned.,.
